What is a diet technician and what do they do?

What is a diet technician? 

Diet Technicians consult with Registered Dietitians to ensure the best standard of nutrition and dietary services are implemented.

What are the responsibilities and duties of a Diet Technician? 

  • Dietary education - providing nutrition education and counseling to patients or clients on topics such as healthy eating habits, portion control, special diets, and lifestyle modifications. This also involves discerning between appropriate and inappropriate client eating behaviors. You’ll have the ability to lead appropriate and relevant nutrition education groups that are engaging and appropriate.
  • Monitoring and evaluation - monitoring patients' progress and adherence to prescribed diets or nutrition plans, and evaluating the effectiveness of dietary interventions. Enforce dietary program and advise clients appropriately on food choices. 
  • Supporting the Registered Dietitian - this includes grocery budget allocation, client menu planning, maintaining a clean and well-stocked kitchen, and cooking and baking as needed. You’ll also implement specific dietary exchange patterns through knowledge of portion size and caloric recommendations set by the Registered Dietitian. 

This experience will prepare you to progress to a Registered Dietitian job with hands-on experience, learning from dedicated professionals, and working closely with a complex population. 

What qualifications do Diet Technicians need? 

To qualify for this position, you’ll need an education or relevant experience in the field of nutrition and/or food service. Additionally, experience in behavioral healthcare is preferred and can help you to easily transition into your new role at DBH.
