LVN job description: duties and responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of an LVN encompass various aspects of client care, treatment, and support. Let's explore the key responsibilities of an LVN in detail: 

Client Care and Treatment

  • Ensure all orders from physicians/psychiatrists are carried out promptly, with clear communication regarding clients' well-being.
  • Implement and follow the Nursing Care Plan, adhering to orders from physicians and psychiatrists.
  • Dispense medication as prescribed, including counting narcotics and maintaining accurate logs.
  • Perform primary first aid and assess the need for physician notification.
  • Conduct weekly blood draws and monitor vital signs of clients.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain a fully stocked nursing station, including ordering necessary supplies.
  • Coordinate clients' medical needs, such as scheduling appointments and completing referrals/prior authorizations for treatments and tests.
  • Document client progress accurately and objectively on a daily basis.
  • Fulfill on-call responsibilities as needed.

Client Support and Communication

  • Support clients during admission processes, assisting with belongings and acclimating them to the program and milieu.
  • Supervise and support clients during community outings when required.
  • Assess clients for suicidality and the possibility of danger to self or others.
  • Communicate effectively with referral sources and outpatient providers for continuity of care.

Requirements to become an LVN
