What is LCSW license and how to get one

Posting date: 06/12/24

At Discovery Behavioral Health, the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license represents a cornerstone in our commitment to providing comprehensive behavioral healthcare.

LCSWs play a vital role in our multidisciplinary team, offering specialized expertise in mental health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

Let's delve into the significance of the LCSW license and its impact on our mission to bring more accessibility to behavioral healthcare.

What is a LCSW license?

The Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license is a credential that signifies expertise in providing mental health services and support to individuals, families, and communities.

LCSWs are highly trained professionals who have completed a master's degree in social work from an accredited institution and have obtained licensure to practice independently in clinical settings.

How to get a LCSW license?

Becoming an LCSW involves a combination of education, supervised clinical experience, and licensure.

At DBH, we value individuals who are dedicated to advancing their professional skills and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Here are the steps to obtaining an LCSW license and how DBH supports clinicians on this journey:

1. Education:

  • Earn a Bachelor's Degree: Complete a bachelor's degree in social work or a related field.
  • Obtain a Master's Degree: Pursue a master's degree in social work (MSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

2. Gain Experience:

  • Accumulate Supervised Hours: Gain supervised clinical experience as part of your MSW program. Typically, this involves completing a specified number of supervised hours in direct client care.

3. Licensure Exam Preparation:

  • Prepare for the Licensure Exam: Study for the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical Level Examination, which is required for LCSW licensure. Familiarize yourself with the exam content and format to ensure readiness.

4. Pass the Licensure Exam:

  • Take the ASWB Exam: Register for and successfully pass the ASWB Clinical Level Examination. Achieving a passing score on the exam is a prerequisite for obtaining licensure.

5. Apply for Licensure:

  • Submit Licensure Application: Complete the application for LCSW licensure in your state. Provide all required documentation, including transcripts, verification of supervised experience, and examination results.

6. Obtain State Licensure:

  • Await Approval: Wait for your application to be processed and approved by the state licensing board.
  • Receive LCSW License: Upon approval, receive your LCSW license from the state licensing board, granting you the authority to practice independently as a clinical social worker.

LCSW requirements

Additionally, candidates must adhere to state-specific regulations and maintain a commitment to ongoing professional development.

In order to maintain licensure, you’ll need to stay informed about continuing education requirements mandated by your state licensing board.

We recognize the importance of ensuring our clinicians are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their roles as LCSWs. We will provide you with the support and tools needed to develop professionally
