3 Behavioral Health Trends to watch for in 2023

Posting date: 10/03/23

The mental health space is one that is continuously evolving, and where demand is on the rise. So what does this mean for behavioral health professionals?

It presents both new opportunities and challenges where professionals will have to adapt, collaborate, as well as stay up to date with the latest trends and changes in the industry.

At Discovery Behavioral Health, we treat patients with substance use, mental health and eating disorders in multiple levels of care with evidence-based and interventional treatments.

We pride ourselves as a forward-thinking organization that embraces change and behavioral health developments so we can provide the highest level of care to all of our patients. Here are 3 behavioral health trends to watch for in 2023 so you too can best serve your patients:

What are the current trends in mental health in 2023?

The most common mental health issues

Did you know that 1 in every 8 people in the world live with a mental disorder?

The three most common diagnoses are anxiety disorders, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These three conditions make up around 30 percent of all diagnoses of mental illness in America.

Understanding these common mental health issues is the cornerstone of effective behavioral health practice. It allows professionals to provide comprehensive, empathetic, and personalized care.

We confirm our commitment to patient-centered care at Discovery. This looks like tailored treatment plans for all of our distinct patient populations which include: adolescents, adults, LGBTQ+, gender diverse, veterans and active-duty military first responders, and families and loved ones of patients.

The interconnectedness of mental and physical health

There has been a distinct shift to more holistic treatments for mental health patients. The interconnectedness of mental and physical health is being more widely recognized, leading to better outcomes for individuals dealing with both health issues.

This aligns with a patient-centered approach to healthcare that recognizes the essential interplay between mental and physical well-being. We care about providing our patients with a happy and rewarding life and strive to ensure a comprehensive approach to treatment and recovery. This means we take into consideration a variety of factors including mental and physical health, social environments and relationships, cultural factors, occupational and educational factors and more.

Access to mental health services for all communities

There is a mental health access gap, this refers to the difference in the proportion of people who have a disorder and those individuals who receive care. This gap for people with mental disorders exceeds 50% in all countries in the world and reaches nearly 90% in low-income countries.

In 2023, there has been more of an active effort to address this gap, and better serve underprivileged communities. Our mission is to bring more access to those who need help overcoming and managing substance use, mental health or eating disorders.

Making behavioral healthcare accessible to all is a theme that informs our decisions and shapes our culture. Access to behavioral healthcare means that a happy, rewarding life can be a reality for every person we come in contact with.
